What is coaching? Learn everything there is to know about this service and how it can be used effectively

Am I satisfied with the life I am living? Am I living with intent and purpose? Do I feel somewhat stuck and just want more from life? Do I feel like I have not met my best potential? If these questions constantly play on your mind then working with a coach could work well for you. But what is coaching and how can it be used effectively?

What is coaching?

Coaching takes you from A to B to help support you in finding the best version of yourself.

Coaching is a safe place where you can fully be yourself and through conversation and practices, discover new ways of being in the world and achieving new possibilities.

But why can’t I do that myself, I hear you ask?

How many self-help books have you read or how many diets have you been on with less than the optimal success you want? For the same reason you can’t tickle yourself, we need help to see our blind spots. That’s why most people can benefit from having a coach.

Coaching uses various inquiry methods, frameworks and approaches to help bring greater self-awareness, different perspectives, challenge limiting belief systems and hold the individual accountable along the process.

We would say that great coaches should be non-judgmental, active listeners, operate with complete confidentiality and trust. There should be an openness and sensitivity to appreciate the depth of the client, taking that in and responding with an offer of practical and creative ways to enable self-development, growth and performance.

Who may benefit from coaching?

Anyone really since we all need that support system that can push us along, cheer us on, reel us in or challenge us when we need it. Sometimes we just need an objective, neutral and confidential sounding board to sort through some of the hazier parts of our life and a coach can definitely do that for us.

What are some reasons that people may look to coaching?

We believe that everyone could benefit from having some support in their lives no matter where they are at and at whatever age. If you have a good friend, family member or work colleague who is that person then great. If you think you would benefit from having someone objective, able to keep confidentiality and you accountable for growth and progress in your career or personal life, consider a coach.

How does coaching differ from therapy?

Counselling or psychotherapy tends to be a long term process in which work is done to diagnose and resolve problematic beliefs, behaviours, relationship issues, feelings and sometimes physical responses. There is more focus on past traumas, to change self-destructive habits, values healing, betters’ relationships and work through painful feelings.

Coaches work more to develop potential through growth and development. They guide but the client puts in the practice and work towards self-discovery and development.

It is important to recognise that both coaches and therapists both work to enable clients to make positive changes in their lives and become more productive. The decision to seek out a therapist or a coach is a very personal one.

What are the different types of coaching?

We believe that the intent of all varied types of coaching is to help support their clients get from point A to B. The difference is in the angle and specific focus areas. We found over 30 types of coaching online but below are a few of the most popular.

  • Personal/Life Coach – if you are struggling to clarify personal goals and priorities. For example, with work/life balance or how things in your personal life are affecting your professional performance, or vice versa. Helping set clear goals, priorities, commitments and helping you make sure you achieve them and feel more fulfilled.

  • Career Coach – if you are looking to map out your career path or wanting a career change. Career coaches can help organise thinking, look at strengths, values and fit to potential industries and companies.

  • Executive/Leadership Coach – as you move up the corporate ladder your focus moves more from doing to leading. Coaches are helpful here to support in everything from communication, various strategies in team building, critical thinking and personal productivity.

  • Wellness Coach – this could be in fitness, nutrition or could even be in the spiritual space. Generally, these are specialists in bringing clients towards a healthier space.

  • Integral Coach – this is about connecting and integrating the mind, body and soul. Only when we are able to access all these body centres and integrate them will we be able to move forward in life as a whole.
